Great White Sightings Prompt Cape Cod Swim Ban - US News Briefs | Newser Labels: sharks 20:15 cdogzilla Wednesday, June 24, 2009BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Many sharks 'facing extinction': I'm terrified of sharks. It doesn't help that a neighbor relayed a "how about that?" story that pretty much makes it impossible for me to go in the ocean ever again. My neighbor saw some of those planes with the propellers that tilt-up flying low over the beach and it turned out that one was being piloted by a friend of his who is currently on active duty. The friend told him he saw two huge sharks maybe 50-60 feet from a pier where there were bunches of people in the water who were, presumably, blissfully unaware of the presence of giant fracking sharks nearby. This story is tangential to the link; I'm not actually advocating shark extinction. I'm just saying, stay out of the water. 'This was a mind-blowing discovery for us.'" Labels: sharks 16:55 cdogzilla Monday, February 11, 2008Roy Scheider dies. With Jaws and The French Connection and, I have to add, Blue Thunder there were a good two or three years where this guy stood with Burt Reynolds and Marc Singer in the trifecta of movie masculinity for me. Not saying that was entirely a good thing, but there it is. Other people had John Wayne, I had Hooper and Beast Master. 10:50 bone daddy Wednesday, November 21, 2007When we think of "survival of the fittest" we always think of biggest, meanest, strongest, etc., but it occurs to me when I read this article about giant, 8 feet long sea scorpions that the giant creature with the three foot claws is gone, but the horseshoe crab is still around in all its ugly, harmless glory. One scientist is quoted as saying he'd rather be in the water with a shark than a "eurypterid." Since it's not clear if the sea scorpions could swim or just crawl on the bottom like lobsters, I'd say that depends on 1) what kind of shark and 2) how deep the water is. Is everyone watching planet earth on the Discovery channel? I've been consistently stunned by these things. Even when it's a subject like "Great Plains" and I think I won't be interested I see something amazing. Not only are they showing things that I've never seen before - and I'm a veteran nature documentary watcher - they're filming them exquisitely. The action shots are spot on. Other shots are so mesmerizing I'm convinced this show is a massive hit among stoners. They've turned nature into a special effect, and I don't mean that to sound cheap because, let's face it, special effects are cool.
